Alias Systems

Alias Systems Corporation (formerly Alias|Wavefront), located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, was a software company that produced high-end 3D graphics software. The company was formed in 1995 when Silicon Graphics bought Alias Research, founded in 1983, and Wavefront Technologies, founded in 1984, then merged the two companies. Alias is now owned by Autodesk.

Alias developed several products including the award-winning Maya, the flagship 3D modeling and animation tool for the Entertainment Markets, StudioTools, used extensively in the automotive, aerospace and industrial design industries, Sketchbook Pro, a 2D drawing and sketching application, and Sketch!, an early Macintosh based 3D modeling and rendering package, among others.

I joined Alias in 1996 and held several roles in Marketing, Sales Support, Product Management, Strategic Planning, Consulting, eventually creating a role called Fellow, which I continue today at Autodesk.

Maya is a high-end 3D computer graphics and 3D modeling software package originally developed by Alias | Wavefront and Alias Systems Corporation. Derived from a Sanskrit word for "illusion", Maya is among the most advanced and feature rich computer graphic applications ever created and, itself, won an Academy Award in 2003 for its contribution to the film industry. Almost every major visual effects film uses Maya in its development pipeline.

Maya was developed by a vast team of talented designers and programmers. My role was to help bring Maya to a technically sophisticated market and then expand that market to a broader base of users.
