TED2006: Fire Visualization
This VizStonification, a blend of a visualization and sonification, is a collaboration between the musician, Thomas Dolby, and myself for the TED 2006 Conference. Part of a series of Fire, Earth, Air and Water, this particular sonification is a rendering of the sun in Calcium light over a 30 day period in the fall of 2004. Thomas converted 27 channels of solar wind data, including energy from electrons, positrons, alpha particles as well as electromagnetic energy, into music that demonstrates the dynamic energy of the sun. The giant solar flare visible mid-way through the animation is among the largest flare ever recorded, almost knocking out the recording satellite and successfully knocking out the power grid to many parts of the United States and Canada on Halloween 2004.
